Cervical Spondylosis is a common condition caused by degenerative changes to the neck. The bones within the neck and its surrounding joints grow small bony protrusions, while the discus around the neck lose height. This results in a decrease in the range of neck movement that is comfortable, causing pain and stiffness.

The degree of symptoms varies between individuals. Though there is often a link between the extent of degeneration and the pain felt, some people can go around with no idea of their condition due to a lack of symptoms. X-rays are helpful at indicating the issue if a patient complains of stiffness, achiness in the neck and a decrease in their range of movement. Nerve roots can also become irritated, pushing the pain into the shoulders and even the arms. In the most severe cases, the patient may feel pain or tingling in their hands. Cold weather can sometimes make the symptoms worse.

Symptoms can be significantly reduced by addressing the issue of pain and stiffness through recommended exercises, although the process is degenerative and cannot be reversed entirely.

Cervical Spondylosis is something that comes as part of the aging process and so cannot necessarily be stopped. A family history relating to the condition may cause one to suffer more than another, as will previous injuries to the neck.

A clinician will likely work on improving the problems you are experiencing, be they pain, stiffness or a decreased movement in the neck. The aim of treatment is to restore as much movement as possible and decrease the pain.

Exercises and free movement will be recommended, as will mobilisation, manipulations and heat techniques.
