WHAT IS LUMBAR FACET JOINT SYNDROME?

The lumbar is the area at the base of the spine around the lower back. The facet joints sit at the back on either side of the spinal column and are responsible for limiting excessive movement around the discs and vertebra. If these joints become irritated and inflamed it can result in lumbar facet joint syndrome.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF LUMBAR FACET JOINT SYNDROME?

The most common symptom is back pain to the side of the spine, made worse by bending. If the nerve roots become irritated as a result of the injury, this could lead to pain in the buttock, hamstring or groin, and can be made worse by sitting or standing for a prolonged period without movement.

The speed of recovery is dependent on the injury and how well you respond to treatment. Sudden episodes can be resolved in a couple of weeks, while a long-term chronic issue could last any timescale – an exact estimate is not possible.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF LUMBAR FACET JOINT SYNDROME?

This injury may be caused by a sudden movement that causes trauma to the fact join, or else prolonged activity that involves leaning backwards and placing strain on the lumbar. It may also be a sign of degeneration, as the discs between our vertebra start to lose volume with increased age. With the flatter discs, the facet joints receive a more direct load, which causes a problem.
